For children, hospitals can be a frightening place, both physically and emotionally. Although Fairview Ridges Hospital's Child-Family Life specialists would like to be able to take away all the pain and fear, they can’t. But they can make it better.
As a member of each child’s health care team, Child-Family Life specialists work to help children understand and cope with their hospital and clinic experiences. They work with infants through adolescents to provide age-appropriate opportunities for children to express their feelings about their illness and understand the medical procedures and treatments they are receiving.
Because Child-Family Life specialists know children need to grow and develop as they normally would at home and in their communities, they help children learn and express themselves through play and interactions with other children. In addition, because family members are the best source of support and comfort, Child-Family Life specialists provide information, support and activities for patients’ parents, guardians and siblings.
